Sapphire Reserve vs Citi Strata Elite for someone who travels once a year

Collecting the whole Edit credit takes two trips. The Strata Elite’s hotel benefit takes one, and is taken off the price when you book.

The quick pick

Choose the Sapphire Reserve if…

  • You take two hotel trips a year: two Edit stays draw $500, against the Strata Elite’s $300 on one.
  • You want the separate $300 travel credit, which applies itself to any travel purchase.
  • The hotels you want are in The Edit (about 1,454 of them).

Choose the Citi Strata Elite if…

  • You take one hotel trip a year: up to $300 off it, against $250 from one Edit stay.
  • You want the money off the price at booking, not as a statement credit afterwards.
  • You would rather pay $200 less a year: $595 against $795.

The short version

For one trip a year the arithmetic is simple: the Reserve gives back $250 on that trip, the Strata Elite up to $300, and the Strata Elite costs $200 less. The Reserve wins on hotels only if you take the second Edit stay too.

Two stays is the hard part

The second $250 is the half of the Edit credit people leave unused, because it needs a second qualifying trip to an Edit hotel. On our sampled prices:

What we could not confirm

Citi’s pages do not say whether the stay must be a prepaid rate, or how many hotels Citi Travel offers. Check both before you count on it. Like the Edit credit, the discount is capped, so a stay well under $300 leaves part of it unused.
