Sapphire Reserve vs Venture X: is a simpler credit worth more?
The Reserve’s hotel credit is bigger but narrow: two prepaid luxury stays a year. The Venture X’s is smaller, open to any booking in Capital One’s travel portal, and on a card that costs $400 less.

The short version
Fee: $795 against $395.
Credit: the Reserve’s $500 needs two prepaid stays of two nights or more at Edit hotels. The Venture X’s $300 applies to a booking through Capital One Travel, which includes flights and rental cars as well as hotels.
Every year: the Venture X adds 10,000 miles every account anniversary. The Reserve adds a $300 travel credit that applies automatically to any travel purchase.
If you collect everything each card offers for travel, the Reserve gives $800 back on a $795 fee and the Venture X $300 plus the miles on a $395 fee. The Reserve only comes out ahead if you really do take two Edit stays a year.
Why the size of the credit can mislead
A credit is worth what you draw from it. The Edit credit is drawn on a stay at one of 1,454 luxury hotels, and on our sampled prices:
26 of 1,439 priced Edit stays come in under the credit, so it pays for the whole two nights. The other 1,413 leave something on your card.
The median stay still costs $992 for two nights after the credit, and 1,122 of them (78%) leave more than $500.
38 of the 50 countries and 52 of the 58 cities we list on their own page have no stay the credit covers in full. The cheapest two nights after the credit in Tokyo $739, Paris $755.
For someone whose trips are to places The Edit covers, at the prices it charges, that is fine. For someone who mostly books ordinary hotels, or flights, a smaller credit they use without thinking about it is worth more than a larger one they have to plan a trip around.
Who each one suits
The Reserve suits two luxury hotel trips a year and someone who values Chase’s points and partners.
The Venture X suits someone who wants the fee back with little effort: one booking through Capital One Travel and the anniversary miles.

Common questions
Is the Venture X a good alternative to the Sapphire Reserve?
For someone who finds the Edit credit hard to use, often yes: it costs $395 against $795, and its $300 travel credit applies to any Capital One Travel booking rather than to prepaid luxury hotel stays. It also adds 10,000 miles every anniversary.
What can the Venture X $300 credit be used for?
Bookings made through Capital One Travel, which sells hotels, flights and rental cars.
Which card has the bigger hotel credit?
The Sapphire Reserve: $500 a year at Edit hotels against the Venture X's $300 travel credit. But only 26 of 1,439 Edit stays cost less than the $250 credit on our sampled prices, so most Edit stays still cost hundreds of dollars on top.
