How the Sapphire Reserve Edit credit works

The Edit by Chase Travel gives Sapphire Reserve holders a $250 statement credit, doubled to $500 at IHG properties. Because credits reimburse a charge rather than discount it, anything you do not spend is forfeited — here is how to spend all of it.

Unspent Credits tracks every property in The Edit by Chase Travel — 1,412 hotels across 646 cities — and ranks them by how much of your credit a stay would actually use rather than by room rate. 122 properties are IHG brands where the credits stack to $500.

The calculation that matters

Both credits are statement credits. They reimburse a cash charge, and any unused portion expires. For a given two-night total:

Two-night totalCredit capReimbursedForfeitedOut of pocket
$180$250$180$70$0
$260$250$250$0$10
$460 IHG $500$500$460$40$0
$505 IHG $500$500$500$0$5

A $460 stay looks cheaper than a $505 stay and is worth $35 less. That inversion is the single mistake this tool exists to prevent: the best booking is the one that lands just above the cap, not the one with the lowest rate.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Chase Sapphire Reserve $250 Edit credit work?

Chase Sapphire Reserve carries a $250 statement credit for stays booked through "The Edit by Chase Travel". It is a statement credit, not a discount: you pay the hotel in cash through the Chase Travel portal, and Chase reimburses up to $250 of that charge afterwards. The stay must be at least two nights and prepaid through Chase Travel.

Can you stack the Edit credit with the $250 IHG credit for $500?

Yes. At Edit properties that are also IHG brands — InterContinental, Kimpton, Hotel Indigo, Six Senses and others — a second $250 credit applies to the same stay, for $500 of total credit. Only a minority of Edit properties qualify; the rest are capped at $250.

What happens if my hotel costs less than the credit?

The remainder is forfeited. Statement credits reimburse an actual charge, so a $460 stay at a $500-eligible property returns $460 and the other $40 expires unused. A $505 stay returns the full $500 and costs $5 out of pocket. Booking just above the cap is therefore worth more than booking below it, which is why sorting by room rate is the wrong way to pick a property.

Do I have to stay two nights?

Yes. One-night stays earn nothing at all. The Edit requires a minimum two-night booking, prepaid through the Chase Travel portal.

Can I pay with points instead of cash?

Not if you want the credit. The credits offset a cash charge, so redeeming the entire stay with points leaves nothing for them to reimburse. You can mix points and cash, but cash has to cover at least the amount you want credited back.

What is the best way to pay the amount above the credit?

Cash on the Sapphire Reserve. Chase Travel bookings earn 8x points, the highest rate the card pays, so each extra dollar returns roughly 13–16¢ in points. Try to keep the separate $300 annual travel credit for flights or parking earlier in your card year, since it applies automatically to whatever travel charge hits first and will otherwise quietly absorb this one.
